Technology and Enterprise
Technology & Enterprise
The Technology and Enterprise learning area provides opportunities for students to become actively involved in dealing with change and meeting the needs of individuals, families and societies. They can develop confidence and competence in their use of equipment and processes and evaluate the appropriateness of technological innovations.
Apart from choosing a variety of courses in the Technology and Enterprise learning area, students also have the opportunity to participate in many Technology and Enterprise activities around the College during the year. This includes assisting with catering for College functions, competing in staff vs student cooking competitions, designing and making sets for College productions, joining the Computer Club, attending and Homework Help in IT labs.
Business and Computing
Computers are everywhere - technology is getting better every day and the need for ICT skills is increasing faster than students can learn them. Almost every industry in the world requires ICT skills. The skills students gain will be transferable throughout their education and career, therefore the following courses are offered at the College:
Year 7 & 8
Students in these year groups complete a semester long course in Information Technology Foundations. The emphasis is on the Technology Process and practical computing skills. Students have the opportunity to develop skills using applications such MS Word, MS Excel, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Movie Maker and Internet Explorer.
Year 9
Students in this year group are offered two courses: Business Technology and Computer Applications. In Business Technology, students study the role of technology in the business world and gain an understanding of personal money management, consumer rights and marketing techniques. The Computer Application course focuses on the development of computing skills using common software application packages such as MS Word, MS Excel, MS Access, MS Publisher and Internet Explorer.
Year 10
Students in this year group are offered two courses: Computer Building and Programming and Computer Sound, Video & Animation. The Computer Building and Programming course explores programming concepts using object orientated programming languages. Students also have the opportunity to build and test a computer whilst learning about hardware components. The Adobe Suite is explored in the Computer Sound, Video & Animation course. Students have the opportunity to create short films, graphics, audio advertisements and animated projects in this multimedia course.
Year 11 & 12
Upper School students have a three Business/IT courses to choose from. Accounting & Finance 2A, 2B aims to make students financially literate by helping them to analyse and make informed decisions about their finances, both personal and business. 2009 is the final year of the TEE Accounting course for Year 12's and will be replaced in 2010 by the new WACE Accounting and Finance course. Applied Information Technology 1C, 1D, 2A, 2B provides opportunities for students to develop knowledge and skills relevant to the use of ICT to meet everyday challenges. Computer Science 2A, 2B aims to take students beyond the use of computers at an application level into the realm of creating software, building and networking computer-based systems.

Technical Drawing & Design
The courses of study undertaken in Technical Drawing provide students with a solid foundation for those interested in pursuing a career in the areas of Drafting, Design and Architecture. The material covered from Year Seven through to Year Twelve, exposes students to a variety of skills, including the use of traditional drafting equipment and technologies ( CAD ).
The course is generally self paced and students are encouraged to think laterally when involved in the design and manufacturing processes. Presentation is an integral part of this subject and students are encouraged to take pride in their folio and final submissions.
Year 7 & 8
In Year Seven, students are provided with the opportunities to investigate the many roles Technical drawing has within our society. They explore and implement the techniques used to represent basic shapes, sketching techniques and mechanical objects.
Year Eight classes continue with the skill development taught in Year Seven, however, a greater emphasis is placed on Computer Aided Design (CAD).
Year 9
Year nine students are introduced to several different topics including, Architecture, Orthogonal and Mechanical representations. Using standard drawing instruments and techniques, students are guided through the processes of sketching initial ideas and layouts, developing Floor plans, Front elevations and evaluation. CAD takes on a greater emphasis, with students using this process to produce a variety of mechanical parts and assembled drawings.
Year 10,11,12 Having received a solid foundation, students from Years Ten, Eleven and Twelve are given the opportunity to work more independently. They are encouraged to use their creative and lateral skills in the areas of Design, Production and producing Engineering drawings. They use the design process to show a range of development, refinement and critical analysis skills. Produce scaled models of their design and reflect on its suitability for its intended audience. Producing engineering drawings are an integral part of these processes and time is set aside to investigate, available materials, methods of construction and assembling techniques. | |

CLOTHING AND FABRICS - Years 7, 8, 9, and 10
This course covers both craft projects as well as making clothes for teenagers. New skills will be learnt using a variety of materials and technology. Students will use their creative skills to make soft furnishing for example; pencil cases, self dyed cushions using natural material from the environment, Night-time clothes to co-ordinate with their bedrooms. Students will use their creative skills to make and interpret current fashion trends to make clothes of their own choice using commercial patterns.
FOOD AND NUTRITION - Years 7, 8, 9, and 10
Students will prepare food for a variety of social occasions. This will include food to give as gifts, food for special occasions e.g. Easter, Christmas. Students will prepare an afternoon tea and invite family members to attend. Practical work will include snacks and meals that teenagers love, but with a healthy approach. The older students will make a variety of food from a selection of other cultures. After developing their knowledge, students will choose a country to focus on. They will be involved in menu planning and presentation of food.

CARING FOR CHILDREN - Year 10
This unit concentrates on the individual's knowledge and understanding of children from conception to 6 years of age and all the activities and events that take place. The students will design, plan and construct several practical items for babies and young children.
CHILDREN, FAMILY AND THE COMMUNITY - Year 11&12
The Children, Family and the Community course provides opportunity to develop in each student an understanding of the diversity of Australian society. Recognising diversity and promoting inclusively among the individuals, families and groups making up our society provides the foundation for a cohesive community. The students will be studying human growth and factors affecting development. They will partake in excursions to Maternity hospitals and listen to guest speakers. They also will devise meals for a pregnant women and babies and design, plan and construct several items for babies and young children that they will be able to use in a play-group session.
Materials Technology - Wood
Materials Technology provides opportunities for students to apply knowledge, skills, understanding and resources when responding to a challenge to meet a human need. Students use a technology process to create or modify a product and select materials that are appropriate to achieving solutions to the technical challenge.
Year 7 & 8
Year 7 & 8 Introductory Materials Technology gives students the opportunity to learn about how to use the workshop in a safely manner. Students will design projects such as: Bridges made from paddle pops, Platforms made from paper, Mug Stands, Pencil Holders, and Acrylic Key Tags. On completion of their designs students will produce them using the skills they have been taught.
Year 9 & 10
In year 9 & 10 we again visit all aspects of safety in the workshop. They are expected to use lateral thinking when problem solving during the design and production stages. Students will start to work more independently and use more machinery when producing their designs.
Projects include: Petrol Tanker, Cross Halving Project, Trinket Box, Table and wood turning.
Year 11 & 12
Year 11 students have the opportunity to undertake the Materials Design & Technology (Wood Context) 1A and 1B or 1C and 1D. This practical course allows students to work with materials, and develop a range of manipulative, processing, manufacturing and organisational skills. This course is divided into three content areas: materials, design and use of technology.
