Crest
Crest
The crest or logo of the college features the major letters “S” and “M” which stand for Servants of Mary. These two letters have been used, in various artistic styles, through the centuries and all over the world, surmounted by three lilies that recall the roots of the Servite Order in Florence, the City of Flowers.
Beneath are found the words in Latin: Servi vocamur Sanctae Mariae. (We are called Servants of Saint Mary) These traditional words hark back to an episode in the life of St. Philip when he was required to explain who they were, these new friars in their somber black habits. The words summarise the pride that the college community takes in its name and in its long history, often expressed in the phrase “Once a Servite Always a Servite”.
