For Year 11 & 12 students not aiming to achieve an ATAR for University entrance, Servite College offers an alternative pathway for them to achieve their WACE.

This programme is ideally suited to those students planning to enter TAFE or employment after Year 11 or Year 12.

All students interested in Smart STEP for 2013 will need to collect a Smart STEP Application from Student Reception, complete it and submit it to your Course Advisor with your Subject Selections.

The Smart STEP Department at Servite College is responsible for coordinating;

i) Work Place Learning (for students interested in job sampling)

  • Students attend a work place in an area of interest, ten Fridays, each semester.
  • Students sample two different placements each year.
  • Students earn a grade for the course (1A/1B and 1C/1D).
  • Students earn credit points for their work experience hours, which is beneficial when applying for TAFE at a later date.

ii) VET in Schools (for students interested in a specific industry)

We have partnerships established with Registered Training Organisations; Polytechnic West, Central Institute of Technology, Hospitality Group Training, SMYL, and MPA Skills.

  • Students attend TAFE or their training provider each Friday, all year, in lieu of the workplace.
  • Students earn a Nationally Recognised Qualification.
  • Students earn credit points for their Certificate, which is beneficial when applying for TAFE at a later date.
  • Students gain a 'head start' on their peers, as they graduate from Servite with an additional qualification.

NB:

  • Students are reminded to keep copies of their school reports in a safe place, as they need to attach a copy to the application forms for all RTO's.
  • Some qualifications have a field placement, which must be completed during the school holidays or exam period.

In both cases you would get a 'head start' on your competitors in highly sought after trades and be a leading candidate for an Apprenticeship on completing school.

Please note the Smart STEP programme does attract a fee of $320 in addition to college Tuition Fees.

A $120 non-refundable deposit is paid on acceptance of an offer to join the programme. The balance is to be paid early in 2013 prior to students commencing in the workplace or at TAFE.

I encourage you to call Mrs Nerida Williams, Coordinator of the Smart STEP Department should you wish to ask specific questions relevant to your child's needs.
