The John Angelo Porro Library and Resource Centre

John Angelo Porro, for whom our Library was named, was a Servite priest recognized for his important work teaching and healing the poor in Milan during the fifteenth century.

Today the John Angelo Porro Library is a vibrant centre where students are encouraged to take advantage of both academic resources and leisure activities. Our extensive book collection ensures that there is plenty to appeal to all tastes and needs. Students are invited to recommend new books and magazines that they would like to read.  The Library collection is constantly being upgraded to include the latest information resources, both online and in print. Library staff are always on hand to provide assistance to our students whether they need help with technology, assignments or finding a book. Through our web page, students also have access at home to online resources such as encyclopedias and media databases.

RESOURCES

Our Year 8 reading program introduces students to a diverse range of literature to encourage enjoyment of reading.  The non-fiction book collection includes topics on all aspects of the curriculum as well as a extensive general interest materials. The Reference section comprises general and specialist encyclopedias, dictionaries, atlases and high quality resource books. These items are only for use in the Library and so are always available. In addition to books and journals the Library has 28 computers which allow access to electronic resources. As well as the Internet, there are also several databases available to students. The Australia/New Zealand Reference Centre database is an online source of magazine, newspaper and journal articles. Among the hundreds of media sources available are newspapers such as The Australian and The Sydney Morning Herald, and magazines and journals including the Bulletin, Quadrant, Money Magazine and Wheels. As well as having the latest news articles, there is also an archive going back for several years. Students have online access to the Encyclopedia Britannica as well as specially selected websites to help with assignments. Daily newspapers, magazines, games, DVDs and videos are a popular part of the Library collection. The Library also has colour photocopying and printing available.

The aim of our Library is to offer a welcoming and supportive environment that responds to the needs of our students.
