Society and Environment

Society & Environment

The Faculty of Society and Environment offers a varied curriculum in Years 7-12 that seek to develop critical, reflective and active citizens who understand their world, whether it be around the corner, within Australia, or on the global stage.

Year 7 students conduct investigations into Australian geography, medieval history, the law, and world cultures.

Year 8 students engage in courses with a Western Australian focus ranging from geography, Nyungar culture, white settlement and the mining industry.

In Year 9 students broaden their focus to the entire nation. Investigations include the 20th Century history, our political system, coastal landforms and management. The year concludes with an introduction to personal budgeting.

Students in Year 10 have the opportunity to specialise in semester long units in individual S&E subjects.  These include:

  • History: History Mysteries
  • Geography: Mapping and Waterways
  • Economics: The Economics of small business
  • Tourism: An introduction
  • Ready for Work: The basics
  • Politics and Law: Our legal system

Process skills are a focus, developing students' abilities to comprehend information from a variety of sources, evaluate them and use them to present their own views and perhaps shape their world and their future. The ability to select specialized units also enables students to focus on areas of interest, allowing greater academic success and a taste of what to expect in upper school S&E subjects.

In Year 11 and 12 the Faculty offers the following subjects:

  • Economics
  • Modern History
  • Careers and Enterprise
  • Geography
  • Political and Legal Studies

These subjects lead to a wide range of occupations, many of which are in significant growth areas and are desirable as background in many post-compulsory courses.
