For hearing students, secondary school is daunting! To the hearing impaired student, settling into secondary school can be a slow and sometimes frightening experience. At Servite College, a number of teaching assistants help to alleviate any problems and facilitate this settling in process by liaising with the student, the parents, the teachers and the administration staff. The role of the support staff also includes:
• Providing the student with in-class support. Tutorial support is provided when this can be accommodated.• Acting as a facilitator in bridging any communication gap between the classroom teacher and the hearing impaired student.• Ensuring the student has had access to all the necessary information disseminated during class time.• Assisting students with problems they encounter in their studies if the student has shown evidence that he/she has made a valid attempt at working through it themselves.• Promoting independence.• Acting as an advocate within the school environment.
Servite College is the only Catholic secondary school in Western Australia offering an on-site support unit for Hearing Impaired students needing classroom and academic support. For more info please contact Servite on 0894446333 or email admin@servite.wa.edu.au
